Weekly Post, Phillip Lorca Dicorcia by Alli

Phillip Lorca Dicorcia was born in 1951 in Conneticut. He studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and also received his Master of Arts at Yale University. He's an American Photographer who works a lot in informal snapshots and staged compositions. The images above are photos of his staged composition works. He iconically composes these images, placing the subject almost dead in the center catching our attention first and the most. Although these photographs are staged, I can still get a sense of everyday emotion just as if these were real-life situations being photographed.

Dicorcia pays very close attention to lighting in his photos. Since they are staged the placement of light is very precise and works well in his compositions. The lighting is very important in these images. I feel without it or only using specifically available lighting the images would not be as strong. Although, in the images that appear to only use available light are just as strong as the ones with artificial light. The use of available light is still very precise in placement and use of it. He uses a shallow depth of field focusing on one person in the center of the image. The way he sets up these staged photographs makes the person in the photo seem like they are in their natural environment just like a natural portrait of someone in their environment.
