Theron Humphrey by Stefan Hancock
Theron Humphrey is a photographer who quit his job as a fashion studio photographer and decided to travel the 50 states and tell a new story every day in August 2011. He wanted to meet a new person and tell a new story every day for a year and record this with photographs, audio, and video. He adopted his best friend Maddie the Coonhound as a traveling companion, and this inspired his series Maddie on Things. In the series he encounters Americana and people throughout his travels and photographs Maddie interacting with the things he finds. Being an animal lover I was immediately attracted to the series based on face-value, but upon further investigation, the series opened up to me and had more meaning than I originally expected. It took a lot of courage for Humphrey to quit his job and pursue an adventure that called him from outside of his comfort zone. Humphrey exhibits an important factor in series building with Maddie on Things by making the decision to go out and see what the world has to offer him through photography, and embraces the unexpected.
