Wayne Lawrence by Stefan Hancock

"Yo, that's the hood beach." photographer Wayne Lawrence was warned when he found out about Orchard Beach, a waterside strip in the Bronx New York City. Like much of the South Bronx, it has a notoriously bad reputation. Wayne Lawrence took the subway to Pelham Bay Park for six summers with the intentions of cataloging this diverse community. Lawrence took Renaldiesque portraits of the patrons of this beach, and simply includes their names and year underneath each photograph. Lawrence states that he's "attracted to individuals who are really sure of themselves, alpha types" who need little to no coaxing to feel comfortable in front of the camera.
