Nelli Palomäki by Ken Riley

Nelli Palomäki's portraits are black and white images with her subjects against a black background. All of the images feature defused, rembrandt lighting. Her subjects are younger adults or children that are dressed in what appear to be 1950's clothing.

The subjects are allowed to emerge from the shadow with parts of them still in darkness, blending into their featureless surroundings. The children have natural and neutral expressions allowing them to not express anything more than what you see. Their expressions, though neutral, still have a feeling of confidence beyond their years. This draws the viewer in, in an almost enticing way. You meet their gaze and are held for quite some time until you realize there is more to these photo, but what, you can't quite put your finger on.
