Weekly Post: Gregory Crewdson by Russell Jones

These images are part of the series Beneath the Roses by Gregory Crewdson. The images in this series portray scenes of suburban American life, either indoor or outdoor. While the photos are staged, they are made to look as if they occurred naturally. Most of the images in this series have either sci-fi or other elements that offset them from typical shots of suburbia.

While on the surface these may seem like photos of sci-fi suburbia, they go a bit further than that. All of the surreal elements in these pictures are not over the top, they are subtle. They are no huge monsters or aliens roaming about, but the elements Gregory adds in to each scene are present enough to startle you. These photos present a narrative of a place that looks pristine at first glance, but is not quite alright once you look further. I think the title of this series follows this well. The "Roses" are the beautiful depiction of suburban life, and he is showing what lies beneath that depiction, in a subtly surreal way.
