Brian Ulrich's series Dark Stores show a multitude of buildings that once contained businesses. They are often shot at night, and only sometimes contain people, but only a few. They are often abandoned mall complexes and buildings that once contained giant retail outlets. The photos are sharp and in focus almost all the way through.

This series to me provides a rather haunting look at a consumer culture. These giant buildings look almost like monolithic temples with their company logos and signs stripped off of them. At the same time they look ancient because of their desertion, despite these building being probably less than 30 or 40 years old. It presents both the impressive accomplishment of human construction, and the depressing side of consumerism; that once a building falls out of purpose it is discarded just like a product that no longer has a use.
